What is an occlusal plate?

An occlusal plate is also called an occlusal splint, night guard, or bite guard. It is a transparent plastic tray that covers the surface of either the upper teeth or lower teeth. It is used to protect your teeth while you sleep and prevent the upper teeth from touching the lower teeth and relieve abnormal pressures. It is a commonly recommended device by dentists for patients who grind their teeth, which is often a result of stress or anxiety.

Teeth grinding can lead to a condition called bruxism that can affect regular people and children. It can damage the enamel and increase the sensitivity of the teeth. In extreme cases, excessive grinding and clenching of the jaw can lead to a jaw condition called TMJ, which can sometimes require surgery.

What is a mouthguard?

A mouth guard is a protective device for the mouth that covers the teeth and gums to prevent and reduce injury to the teeth, lips, jaws, and soft tissues during intense physical activity.
Your dentist can create a custom-made mouth guard to fit your exact dental anatomy. They tend to be more comfortable than store-bought mouthguards and provide better and more effective protection against sports-related trauma.
